Diving In Lombok
Lombok's offshore islands (Gilis) are ringed with beautiful coral reefs, home to a wide variety of sub-aquatic wildlife, with sharks and plentiful turles livening up the already vibrant display of tropical reef fishes. The Gili sites are excellent for less experienced divers; most dives were in very calm water, no deeper than 18 meters. Gili Trawangan and Gili Air have quite good reefs. The best time to dive the Gilis is from late April to late August. Visibility averaged 15 meters. You can find luxury accomodations in Senggigi beach on the mainland, this is an hour ride from the islands.
Reef Type : Coral slopes and sandy bottom, some wall
Access : 15 min by boat
Coral : Good variety and fair amount
Fish : Fair to good variety and numbers
Highlights : Reef whitetip sharks and giant trevally at Takat Malang
Gili Air : White sandy beaches, palm trees and a relaxed atmospher create the ambience of this quiet and small island.
Gili Trawangan : The biggest of the three islands, known as "the party island". After diving, you can have fun every evening at one of the parties, or just relax.
Gili Meno : Surrounded by white sandy beach, is located in the middle of the Gili Islands.
You can find luxury accomodations in Senggigi beach on the mainland, this is an hour ride from the islands. There is 5-star dive resort in Senggigi and Gili Air and 5-star International Diving Center on Gili Trawangan

Papua : Raja Ampat Diving
The Raja Ampat area of Northwest Irian Jaya is filled with islands, surrounded by reefs and inundated with fish! After 9 years in the area we have only begun to discover the natural treasures awaiting us on each dive.
The area's reefs are covered in a diverse selection of both hard and soft corals. Most of the areas reefs are pristine, with mile after mile of perfect hard corals, drift after drift of Dendronephya (soft) corals of many species and colors ranging from brilliant red, to shocking yellow pretty pink and exotic purple. Most reef dives are very colorful.
Among, above, and on top of the corals are fish. Schooling fish, solitary fish, beautiful fish, ugly fish, large fish, small fish! Some fish that are considered to be rare in many parts of the world are abundant in the Raja Ampat area. For example, many Sargassum Frogfish are found in the floating weed in front of the dive resort.
Wobbegong Sharks are found on many dives, often lying atop perfect table corals like a fish carefully arranged by a chef on a dinner plate. The Epaulette Shark, a small shark only a foot long, is numerous and found very often on night dives in the seagrass or even on the shelf of a wall dive.
Giant Clams are found at many of our dive sites. These clams are large enough to swallow a child, but are embedded in the reef and covered with soft corals, tunicates and sponges so thick they can barely close their shells. Wai Island has a "Giant Clam Area" just off the beach.
The offshore reef sites, especially those near Kri Island are poplulated with MEGATONS of schooling fish! Many different species school in the current sometimes mixing so that a diver is surrounded by a chaotic mass of fish life. The most common to see are barracuda, jacks, bannerfish, surgeonfish, fusiliers, parrotfish and snappers. All in many species. The fish are so dense that they sometimes block the view of your dive buddy or the surface!
RAJA AMPAT DIVING FACTS
Most dives are drift dives due to strong currents in the area. The currents provide nutrients for the outstanding quantity and variety of fish life and corals in the area. A fabulous variety of colorful soft corals and plenty of reef fish are found at most sites. Large schools of fish are known to populate some areas, pelagics such as sharks, Manta and Mobula Rays, dolphin, whales and turtles are frequent sights.
Visibility is good, but not spectacular, and is best in the morning dives. The water temperature is 82°-84°F (28°-29°C) year round.
Water Temperatures
The average sea surface temperature between Nov and Apr is 28°C and can drop up to 2°C in the south with the SE trade winds from May to Oct. Actual values vary very little from average values being within 2°C on 90% of occasions.
The Raja ampat area is not only stunning underwater. Topside, the islands have a very diverse topography with steep mountain shores and deserted white sand beaches. The area is far off the beaten track and is rarely visited by foreigners. The raw beauty of the islands will fascinate you. It's dense jungle interior is known for its many orchids and the paradise birds. Waigeo and Batanta have the Wilson's and the Red Bird of Paradise both endemic to this area, as well as abundantly present Lorikeets, Parrots, Kingfishers, Eagles and Hornbills.

Wakatobi Islands
The Wakatobi island lies just off the south-eastern tip of Sulawesi in Tukang Besi Archipelago. This is a undiscovered jewels of Indonesian diving site. This island is populated, inland by Butonese, at the ocean edge by Bajo people "sea gypsies" and has an interesting that have been formed by geologic uplift of fossil coral terrace, evident in the step like appearance of these islands from a far. A stroll through any of Tukang Besi islands reveals fascinating fossils reef formations, including the occasional giant clam or nautiloic shell. Dugong, sperm and pilot whales, spinner and bottlednose dolphine, coconut crabs, maleo birds, and orcas can be found in this island. But the real draw of this area are the many scattered atolls, most of which are inaccessible to the Bajo's dugout canoes for seven month of the year. The fish population here are as dense as any in Indonesia. The corals, both hard and soft, are fantastic.
TUKANG BESI
As one of the world's most unique diving destinations, the Tukang Besi chain of islands, south-east of Sulawesi, could be considered as one of the "last outspots of diving civilization" featuring colossal drop-offs and magnificent coral reefs. Remote and exotic, Tukang Besi was once referred by the Cousteau Society as the finest diving spot in the world. An enchanting world of natural beauty.
The entire area serves as a cetaceam thoroughfare, and night dives along the walls here are absolutely breathtaking. The entire wall brust into vivid color as Tubastrea and soft corals 'bloom', and the diversity of invertebrates such as custaceans, nudibranch, pencil urchi, etc. is bewildering.
Currently this area is completely inaccessible to divers except through a new operation called Wakatobi divers on the small island of Tolandono.
Facilities
Wakatobi Dive Resort located in a remote beautiful and romantic setting in south east Sulawesi, provides cozy accommodation, excellent food, friendly service combined with superb diving guided by highly professional and knowledge instructors. All rooms are constructed entirely in wood and facing to the ocean.

Kungkungan Bay
Kungkungan Bay, Lembeh Straits
Just north of the busy port of Bitung, in the straight formed by Lembeh Island, is some of the finest diving in North Sulawesi. Relatively unknown compared to Bunaken, Lembeh has fast developed a reputation as being the place for muck. The sheltered straits form a kind of bottleneck in the surrounding sea, which has led to an abundance of plankton.
Kungkungan Bay is a part of the world famous Lembeh strait which in the last few years has become the premier macro and critter diving destination in the world. Kungkungan also known affectionately as " muck diving" as many of the unusual and rare critters are found out in the open on black sand bottoms. But many other excellent dives are available. Kungkungan Bay Resort's luxuriuous but tasteful bungalows, an architecturally interesting, offers western cuisine and few local dishes with excellent dive center.
There are three WW II shipwrecks and one sunken Taiwanese fishing vessel to dive on. All wrecks are easily dived and are beautifully overgrown and teeming with reef life. Novice divers and experienced divers alike will find fun and exciting dive sites unlike anything they may have seen anywhere else.
There's one dive sites called Batu Angus, located at the northern end of the strait on the Sulawesi side. The side of an old lava rapid, hence the name, which literally means "Burnt rock". Here rough chunks of black, volcanic rock enclose a quiet area that looks like the mount of a river.
